Hues Across 23.5°N: Chen Cheng-po and his journey across borders is an exhibition featuring paintings by Chen Cheng-po, an artist who began his career in the Japanese ruling period of Taiwan, from 1895 to 1945. Chen’s works represent a colonial intellectual’s engagement and response to the hybrid, multifaceted modernity of his time, which involves the interplay of Taiwanese local colors and transnational techniques through the artist’s border-crossing experiences in the 1920s and 1930s.
The exhibition is held from April 6th to April 22nd at two venues (with different sets of paintings): Red Gym at UW-Madison (716 Langdon Street) and Madison Senior Center (330 West Mifflin Street).
The opening ceremony is open to the public (Red Gym; Monday, 6pm, April 6th), as is the music performance by students of UW School of Music (Madison Senior Center; Monday, 9:30am, April 13th) and the academic lecture (Law School 3260 - Foley & Lardner Courtroom, Friday, 7pm, April 17th).
